Goals & sub-goals

Structure that mirrors how you actually think.

Most habit apps hand you a flat checklist. ProtoHabit organizes habits into goals and sub-goals — nested as deep as your life demands — and rolls every log back up, so one glance shows where your effort went.

A folder that thinks in outcomes

A Goal in ProtoHabit is a living folder: it holds habits, and it holds other goals. Nest them as deep as the outcome needs — Lose Weight holds Training, Training holds Run. Your Home screen shows MY GOALS and MY HABITS, and every habit lives in exactly one goal.

That one rule keeps the structure honest. Open a goal and everything inside it belongs there — no duplicates, no orphan lists, no wondering where "Run" went.

See where your effort goes

Every goal page carries a Breakdown card. Pick an attribute two or more habits share — minutes, km, dollars — and it totals them for Today, Week, Month or All time, with a stacked bar and a % legend showing each habit’s share.

The rollup covers the whole subtree, sub-goals included. If Training logged 40 minutes and Stretching logged 20, Lose Weight shows the 60 — and exactly who contributed what.

Five questions, then a plan

The Goals tab is a guided builder, not a blank form. Pick a focus area — Health & Fitness, Finance, Personal Growth, Work & Career, or create your own — then choose from around 18 curated goals: lose weight, save more money, overcome procrastination, learn a new skill set.

Answer about five short questions — your baseline, your timeline, what usually gets in the way, how consistent you’ve been — and you get a habit plan tuned to your answers. Five questions, done.

You curate, then you start

The plan is a proposal, not a contract. Add or remove anything until it looks like something you’d actually do, then tap "Start this Goal" — the goal and its habits land on your Home screen together.

FAQ

Goals & sub-goals: your questions, answered

Can a goal contain other goals?

Yes. Sub-goals nest as deep as you need — Lose Weight can hold Training, and Training can hold Run. Breakdown totals roll up the whole subtree automatically.

Can one habit belong to two goals?

No — every habit lives in exactly one goal. That keeps the numbers honest: nothing gets counted twice, and each goal’s Breakdown card reflects real effort.

What does the Breakdown card show?

Pick an attribute shared by two or more habits and the card totals it for Today, Week, Month or All time, with a stacked bar and % legend showing each habit’s share. Sub-goals are included in the rollup.

Do I have to use the guided goal builder?

No. The builder takes you from a focus area to a ready habit plan in about five questions, but you can also create a goal from scratch and fill it with any habits you like.
